Troyan Monastery

Troyan Monastery
It is undoubtedly the main historical and cultural monument of the region.
The monastery is located 10 km away from Troyan, on the bank of the Cherni Ossam River.
It is one of the biggest monasteries in Bulgaria, established in the 16th century. It is remarkable with its architecture, wood-carvings and incredible frescoes of the monastery church, which were painted by Zahari Zograf - one of Bulgaria’s most famous mural painters of the Revival period.
During the 19th c. the monastery was a famous literary and revolutionary centre.
Levski (the Apostle of freedom) established a revolutionary committee there and all monarchs took part in it. Visitors are transferred back to these times by visiting the Apostle’s museum in the monastery.

A great treasure of the monastery is also the miraculous icon of the three-handed Holy Virgin.
On 15 August, the holiday of the monastery, the icon is taken away from the temple for a big procession to the neighboring chapel. Except for the icons, the monastery is also famous for its characteristic wood-carving iconostasis.
